Ipswich have qualified for
European Competition on Twelve occasions, the first was
after winning the English League Championship in the
1961/1962 season.
The
most successful European Campaign was in 1980-81,
under the command of Sir Bobby Robson when the Club won
the UEFA Cup 5-4 on aggregate against Dutch side AZ
Alkmaar.
The last occasion that Town qualified
for Europe was the 2002/2003 season
through the fair play league, despite the side having
been relegated from the Premiership at the end of the
previous season. On this occasion Town were elminated by
Slovan Liberec after a penalty shoot out away from home.
To this day, Town have never lost at home in
Europe in 31 matches at Portman Road, including those
against the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcleona
and Inter Milan making Portman Road a formidable place
to visit.
